Gwenllian

"Gwenllian Williams insists she is just an ordinary person with an ordinary life. Living on a farm in rural North Wales , she comes across as someone who is quietly determined and who copes with whatever life can throw at her. Just as well; Gwenllian was born with both hips congenitally dislocated, and after spending much of her childhood undergoing surgery to correct it now finds herself confined to crutches after a replacement joint failed and fractured her hip, resulting in her having that hip removed earlier this year. That determination has seen her fight her way out of a wheelchair and back to two of her greatest loves; her Welsh cobs, and her music. She has, this year, successfully produced her own home-bred filly for the showring, got back in the saddle to ride again, and now released this, her second CD.

Her first CD, released last year, was recorded to raise funds for the orthopaedic hospital where she spent so much time, both as patient and, later, as a nurse. It met with such enthusiasm from the public who bought it, and she found herself asked so often when she would be releasing the next, that she returned to the studios to record this, her second. Not without hardship either; since the first CD was released Gwenllian has had more surgery which has left her without a hip. Because of this she has had to work hard to find a way to sing without standing for long periods, something that is uncomfortable and tiring with crutches. It is typical of her enthusiasm, dedication and determination that not only has she succeeded in producing this CD without standing to sing for the most part, but that her voice, if anything, sounds better than before; the CD is full of rich, round vocals that send shivers down the spine. If she was finding her own feel with the first CD, this second one quite clearly announces she has found it, comfortable with her own voice and singing with a fullness and feeling that is a joy to listen to. She has written her own lyrics to songs on both the first and second CDs, with an easy flair and clarity that highlight the simple beauty in the words.

Gwenllian has worked with two artists on this CD. The first is Jayne Hocking (nee Thomas), a school friend Gwenllian hadn't seen for nine years, although they did keep in touch by telephone. Jayne, after receiving a CD of Barbara Dickson and Elaine Paige singing 'I Know Him So Well' and a paper copy of the Welsh words, from Gwenllian, along with an invitation to go to the studios and sing with her, headed off to Beehouse Studios near Llanfyllin, where in one day and with no prior rehearsals the two produced a really good wrap.

The second is Alun Jones, a familiar face and voice on stages the length and breadth of Wales . The baritone intended to sing with Gwenllian was sadly unable to complete the recording, and at a stage too late to drop the track or substitute it for another, Gwenllian turned to Alun Jones, Mark II, as she calls him- (this is not the same Alun Jones who sang with her on the first CD!!) Alun willingly stepped in. The result is a beautiful recording.

On meeting Gwenllian the first thing that strikes you is her smile. She approaches everything with that smile, and leaves you with the feeling of optimism she seems to take with her wherever she goes. If I ask her to describe herself, the words she chooses are that she is a normal person dealing with the good and the bad that life hands out. Normal , certainly; but she is also extraordinary, making all she has had to cope with over the years secondary to her passions; her family, her horses, and her music. This album is a testament to someone whose strength and determination to live a normal life have made so much more possible. That strength and depth of feeling runs right through her music, heard in both her singing and her writing, and makes it all well worth listening to. "

Gwenllian

Mae Gwenllian Williams, sy’n byw ar fferm yng nghefn gwlad Gogledd Cymru, yn mynnu mai unigolyn cyffredin yw hi sy’n byw bywyd cyffredin. Rhywun sy’n benderfynol ac yn ymdopi â phopeth sy’n dod i’w rhan yw hi, yn ôl pob golwg. A da hynny: ganwyd Gwenllian â chluniau datgymaledig, ac fe gafodd lawdriniaeth sawl tro yn ystod ei phlentyndod i geisio cywiro hyn. Mae hi bellach yn mynd wrth ei baglau o ganlyniad i godi cymal cyfan un glun yn gynharach eleni ar ôl i gymal newydd fethu. Y pendantrwydd yn ei chymeriad sydd wedi ei hysgogi i godi o’i chadair olwyn i fwynhau dau o’r pethau sy’n rhoi’r pleser mwyaf iddi; sef ei chobiau Cymreig, a’i cherddoriaeth. Er cael dwy lawdriniaeth fawr ers mis Medi 2004 mae hi wedi llwyddo i fagu ei merlen ifanc ei hun i’w harddangos, wedi dringo i’r cyfrwy unwaith yn rhagor a bellach wedi rhyddhau ei hail gryno ddisg.

Recordiwyd ei CD gyntaf a ryddhawyd y llynedd, i godi arian ar gyfer yr ysbyty orthopaedig lle treuliodd gymaint o amser, fel claf i ddechrau, ac yna fel nyrs. Yn sgîl brwdfrydedd y cyhoedd a brynodd y ddisg gyntaf, a’u holi taer ynglŷn â pha bryd y byddai’r CD nesaf ar gael, fe ddychwelodd i’r stiwdio i recordio’r ail ddisg hon. Nid gwaith hawdd oedd hynny: ers rhyddhau’r CD gyntaf, cafodd Gwenllian ragor o lawdriniaeth, a chodwyd cymal y glun yn gyfan gwbl y tro hwn. Bu’n rhaid iddi weithio’n galed i ddod o hyd i ffordd o ganu heb sefyll am gyfnodau hir, gan fod hynny mor anghyfforddus a blinderus gyda’r baglau. Er iddi gynhyrchu’r CD heb dreulio nemor ddim amser ar ei thraed, mae ei brwdfrydedd, ei hymroddiad a’i phenderfyniad yn golygu bod ansawdd ei llais yn well nag erioed; mae’r CD yn llawn o leisio cyfoethog, cyflawn sy’n gyrru ias o bleser i lawr eich cefn. Os mai ‘ceisio darganfod ei llais’ oedd hi ar ei CD gyntaf, mae’r ail yn datgan yn gwbl eglur iddi lwyddo yn hynny o beth. Mae’r sain yn cyfleu’r syniad ei bod yn gyfforddus â’i harddull, ac mae’r caneuon yn llawn teimlad ac yn hawdd gwrando arnynt. Iddi hi y perthyn geiriau rhai o’r caneuon ar y ddwy CD, ac mae harddwch syml yn eu heglurder.

Mae dau artist arall wedi ymuno â Gwenllian ar y CD yma. Jayne Hocking (Thomas cyn priodi) yw un, cyfaill iddi o’i dyddiau ysgol na welodd Gwenllian mohoni am naw mlynedd, er iddynt gysylltu dros y ffôn. Wedi derbyn gwahoddiad i fynd i’r stiwdio i ganu gyda Gwenllian, teithiodd Jayne o’i chartref yn Essex i Stiwdios Beehouse ger Llanfyllin gyda CD ag arni Barbara Dickson ac Elaine Paige yn canu I Know Him So Well a chopi papur o’r geiriau Cymraeg. Mewn cwta ddiwrnod, heb unrhyw ymarferion blaenorol, llwyddodd y ddwy i gynhyrchu perfformiad rhagorol o ‘Dwi’n Nabod O’n Dda’.

Alun Jones (Alun Cefnau) yw’r llall. Mae Alun yn wyneb cyfarwydd – ac yn llais cyfarwydd – ar lwyfannau Cymru benbaladr. Yn anffodus, nid oedd yr artist y bwriadwyd iddo ganu’r ddeuawd â Gwenllian yn gallu gorffen y recordio, felly a hithau’n rhy hwyr i hepgor trac neu i ddewis un yn ei le, fe droes Gwenllian at Alun am help. Felly dyma Alun Jones yr Ail! (Nid yr un yw’r Alun Jones hwn â’r Alun Jones a ganodd gyda Gwenllian ar ei CD gyntaf). Yr hyn sy’n hynod am ‘Bendith Fo’ (Bless This House) yw bod Ritchie Jones, Cefnau, ewythr i Alun, a Linda Jones gynt o’r Foel wedi canu’r fersiwn Saesneg droeon i gynulleidfaoedd yn Sir Drefaldwyn a thu hwnt. Hyd yn oed yn blentyn eithaf ifanc, roedd Gwenllian yn arbennig o hoff o’r gân, yn enwedig fel y canwyd hi gan Ritchie a Linda. Penderfynodd y byddai rhyw ddiwrnod yn ceisio ei chyfieithu i’r Gymraeg.

Pan fyddwch yn cyfarfod â Gwenllian, yr hyn sy’n eich taro gyntaf yw ei gwên. Bydd y wên honno gyda hi bob amser ac yn adlewyrchu’r gobaith sy’n ei dilyn hi i bob man. Pan ofynnaf iddi ddisgrifio ei hun, dywed mai unigolyn cyffredin yw hi sy’n derbyn pleserau a phoenau bywyd gystal ag y medr, fel pawb arall. Mae hi’n gyffredin, ond yn eithriadol ar yr un pryd. Mae’r hyn y mae hi'n teimlo'n angerddol yn ei gylch – ei theulu, ei cheffylau a’i cherddoriaeth yn bwysicach iddi na’r hyn y bu’n rhaid iddi ymdopi ag ef dros y blynyddoedd. Mae’r CD hon yn dyst i allu rhywun y mae ei chryfder a’i phenderfyniad i fyw bywyd normal wedi ei hysgogi i wneud cymaint mwy na hynny. Clywir y dyfnder teimlad hwnnw yn ei chanu a’i chyfansoddi, a dyma yn anad dim sy’n gwneud y CD yn un gwerth gwrando arni.
